Road trips…

Here we are in a well-behaved moment. (This would never happen in the blue van.)

Here we are in a well-behaved moment.
(This would never happen in the blue van.)

I love a good road trip. From the time I was a kid, I never slept better than when my family of 6 was in the blue van on our way to Colorado for vacation, usually after a day of singing and sweating and fighting on foam pad “mattresses” and plaid upholstered bench seats my dad had made from scratch.

We would have died in the era of required car seats, and I am glad that our memories aren’t of DVD players in the back of the seat. Maybe that’s why I loved our touring van so much, despite its super-mauve interior.

Randy and I just finished a road trip from Colorado east to Illinois where we are storing our things at his way-too-generous sister and brother-in-law’s house for a while so that we can pursue this dream of full-time travel, music, and service. We listened to a book on tape, cranked up The Best of Heart, and discussed everything from politics to sex to religion to his new Spiderfence project (yes, that was a shameless plug). We also listened to the near-final mix of “Fly Today” from it and it sounds magnificent on a Budget truck stereo.

On Sunday, we are heading to Ireland, Wales, and Hungary for a vacation and to see some traditional Irish music, Welsh punk rockers the Alarm, and Irish singer/songwriter Duke Special. It should be inspirational.

Upon our return to Colorado, we’ll be playing several shows before making a slow trip around the USA, starting with a fundraiser at our home church, Corona Presbyterian, for that Mexico service trip we were talking about in a previous blog. So…it’s official.

If you’re interested in supporting us in this effort, please get in touch. It doesn’t cost much to fund such a project and it makes an unbelievable difference in the lives of the recipients in Juarez.

That’s the update for now. Thank you for checking in on us. Stay tuned for stories from the Pacific Northwest in March, and a new Empty Room Series video in very short order!
