Wandering the World – Week 1

It has been almost a week since we left Denver for Ireland. Our cosy fall home here is nestled in a cul de sac with ocean views just at the end of the block. It is a real gift to have use of this place while our friends, the owners, Sammy & Kylie, tour the States promoting their new CD “Back to Ireland,” The wood burning stove is going, and the laundry is hanging out on the line. This is a small community–a few miles from another, much bigger small town. Today, we took a walk into the nearest village to see if there was a pub within walking distance. There is one – Jimmyz, just under (or over?) a mile away. Hmmm. We’ll have to investigate further when we get back from Poland. On the way back, we picked a bunch of blackberries from bushes growing wild along the narrow roads here.

Yesterday, we were tourists. We saw the Dunbrody Famine Ship – where our tour guide Jason explained what sounded like a smelly and beleaguering experience of crossing the ocean with 150 of your best friends in the bottom of a lumber ship – often 5 to a bed in the mid to late 1800’s. Yikes. My own stepfather is a 92-year old Irish immigrant and thankfully came over a bit later than that, but it did make me wonder just how much improvement could be made in 70 or 80 years.  I am guessing a lot because he describes being fascinated and delighted at his ticket in the cheapest part of the ship.

Tomorrow, we will visit the local church for 10.30 service. We’ll report back… Goodbye for now. Randy just put some fresh blackberries in front of me, and there is a fire in the fireplace. Time for this screen to stop glowing.

  1. “Randy just put some fresh blackberries in front of me, and there is a fire in the fireplace.” (And, what comes next is private.) Best sentence I’ve read in a long time.
